My day job has taken up all of my time lately. I have had the best of intentions to write but sadly, life took over and I am running on empty. I have still had some time to surf and came across TrustedHousesitters which offers you low-cost holidays looking after someone else’s property and pets while they go away. With surging domestic holiday prices, this needs further investigation.
How does it work?
Most of the owners are looking for people to take care of their pets and sometimes even farm animals. You can sign up to have someone come and look after your place or you can look for places to stay. There are different membership options and you can buy a combined membership if you want to be both a sitter and owner advertising your house for people to come to.
A basic annual sitter membership costs £99 which allows you to apply for multiple worldwide housesitting opportunities as well as giving you free access to phone calls with a vet. Their premium offer is £199 yearly and this includes video calls with a vet while sitting, insurance, cancellation insurance, and 2 airport lounge passes too. Even with this annual cost, you really will get a low-cost holiday with TrustedHousesitters.
So how safe is inviting strangers into your home? Will their pets be a complete nightmare? Will you get any time to explore the area and just relax?
TrustedHousesitters house a review-type system that is similar to something like Airbnb. You can read what others have said about the sitting opportunity and the pets. Owners can review sitters too. Even the basic account type checks your email, phone and you have to submit a reference when you sign up to TrustedHousesitters The more expensive option also confirms your identity and checks your documents.
On certain plans, insurance cover is offered against property damage, theft, and sitter accidents. Membership provides for contact with vets and on some plans, video calls with vets.
You do need to enjoy looking after pets and stick with any owner requirements such as the number of walks and time that the pet can be left alone which you may feel may hamper your holiday plans.
Nana Knows Verdict
At the time of writing there were more than 800 house sitting opportunities available, ranging from short stays of a few days to several months in a whole range of locations. TrustedHousesitters seems the perfect way to get a low-cost holiday if you enjoy looking after animals. They have been around for 11 years so should have plenty of experience to support successful stays. Trustpilot rated excellent with over 13000 reviews. Quite a few people did not expect their membership to autorenew. Many companies do this these days but if you dont want this then put a note in your diary to cancel.
The other thing I could not find is what if you sign up and no owner accepts your request to house sit, can you get a refund? As a newcomer you will have few reviews from owners on the site so they may be less inclined to let you sit for them. Do popular locations gets taken quickly as well as popular dates? They do have a page about how to set up a successful profile but before signing up, it is probably worth ringing them to ask these questions and any others you may have.
Nana knows verdict. Do your research and get low-cost holidays with TrustedHousesitters.
